Each diamond, since mine until a finger of a woman, has always a classification.

This classification is confidential and formulated in technical language when it is iussued by professionals in the market during transactions to let them to quickly and efficiently determine the quality of the diamonds. When the classification assumes formal character, it is called certification or gemological report.

Here we talk only about parameters to classify a polished diamond and not about rough diamonds. The criteria for gemological report to give a value to a polished diamond, were defined in 1953 by the GIA (Gemological Institute of America). Educational institution nonprofit, the GIA was established in 1931 in Los Angeles by the jeweler Mr. Shipley with his savings. He considered absurd that traders involved in the jewelry supply chain did not know the main features about precious stones. Besides the gemological laboratory GEM LAB, the GIA is primarily concerned with education and releases the most prestigious diploma of the world in gemology “Graduate Gemologist” GG.

Gemological analysis should refer to the standard international classification introduced by GIA which can be summarized in the famous 4 “Cs”: CUT, CLARITY, COLOR and CARAT.

If we set 100 as price of a diamond, the cut counts for 40% and the other 3 Cs each for the 20%.

Certification or gemological analysis of a diamond is not an appraisal, but it is a tool to allow a skilled and professional trader to get a price and it works like rating grade of financial agency. So, especially for buyers who buy a diamond for investment, the gemological report must be authoritative and internationally recognized or when you decide to sell your diamond you might have a bad surprise!

Diamonds often have a laser inscription on the girdle of the stone to refer it to its gemological report.

Sometimes they are sealed to ensure the integrity of the stone, although in diamond exchanges they are always traded open and never sealed!
