Each diamond, from its extraction until the finger of the final purchaser, is always accompanied by a classification.
This classification is confidential and formulated in a technical language when it is used by professionals during rough transactions, in order to determine the diamond quality quickly and efficiently. When the classification is formalized and ready to be officially introduced, it is called a “gemmological report” also known as a “certificate”.
This gemmological report of a diamond is not an appraisal; its presence is necessary, but not sufficient to buy diamonds as investment. It is just a tool to enable a skilled professional to find the value of a diamond.

Often, polished diamonds are provided with an alphanumeric laser inscription on the side – called “girdle” – where the certificate number is engraved in order to link the stone to its gemmological report.
Sometimes they are also sealed so as not to compromise the integrity of the diamond.
Remember: in a diamond exchange, diamonds are traded by the naked eye with a loupe and never closed in a seal.
